Field Training Officers

Course Description

This course provides the essential framework, knowledge, and skills for law enforcement officers to become effective Field Training Officers (FTOs). Participants will learn to mentor, coach, and lead trainee officers by applying modern instructional principles and proven evaluation techniques. The curriculum focuses on transforming experienced officers into competent trainers and evaluators who can objectively document performance, provide constructive feedback, and develop new officers to meet agency standards while successfully navigating the legal and ethical responsibilities inherent to the role.

Course Objectives and Outcomes

Understand the Roles of an FTO

Grow to understand the multifaceted roles and responsibilities of a Field Training Officer. This includes functioning as a trainer, coach, mentor, evaluator, and first-line supervisor. You will learn to apply the distinct competencies required for each role, from providing on-the-job instruction and delegating duties to offering guidance, emotional support, and professional role modeling. The goal is to build a positive and professional training environment that fosters growth and success.

Apply Modern Training & Communication Principles

Learn to apply proven principles of adult learning and effective communication to maximize trainee development. This course covers different learning styles, the importance of emotional intelligence in managing interpersonal dynamics, and strategies for overcoming common barriers to communication and learning. You will explore how to adapt your teaching methods to match adult learning styles for better retention and application, ensuring you can connect with and develop all trainees.

Conduct Fair and Objective Evaluations

Develop the skills to evaluate trainee performance fairly, objectively, and effectively. Participants will learn to use various evaluation forms, including Standardized Evaluation Guidelines (SEGs) and Daily Observation Reports (DORs), to document performance based on observable behaviors. A point of emphasis is placed on avoiding common evaluation pitfalls such as personal bias and the error of leniency, ensuring that evaluations are consistent, defensible, and focused on trainee success.

Counsel and Mentor for Success

Focus on strategies for providing constructive feedback and support to help trainees grow. This includes conducting both informal and formal counseling sessions, addressing performance issues with timely and respectful communication, and developing action plans to enhance officer performance. You will learn to provide both positive, reinforcing feedback and corrective, redirecting feedback in a way that motivates the trainee and builds a relationship based on trust and professionalism.

Mitigate Liability Through Proper Documentation

Address the legal and professional responsibilities of an FTO, with a strong emphasis on reducing liability risks for yourself and your agency. This includes a review of foundational case law related to “failure to train” and supervisory negligence. You will learn the critical importance of proper documentation, fairness, and adherence to policy in making training decisions and justifying personnel actions, ensuring all evaluations and remedial efforts are meticulously recorded.

Navigate Diversity and Generational Differences

Gain an awareness and respect for diversity in background, culture, and generational values to build more inclusive and effective training environments. This topic explores how diversity issues can impact the training relationship and provides strategies for demonstrating acceptance, respect, and understanding. You will learn to adapt your approach to bridge generational gaps and cultural differences, improving communication, evaluation, and the overall success of the FTO program.
