SFST Instructor School

Course Description

This intensive SFST Instructor School equips law enforcement officers with the advanced instructional techniques and comprehensive knowledge necessary to effectively train other officers in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST). Participants will learn how to apply adult learning principles, master effective presentation and communication skills, develop and utilize training aids, and confidently manage live alcohol workshops and video-based training sessions. By mastering these skills, officers will become highly effective SFST instructors, capable of contributing significantly to impaired driving detection and traffic safety within their agencies and communities.

Course Objectives and Outcomes

Adult Learning Principles for Effective Training

Develop a deep understanding of adult learning principles and their direct application to law enforcement training. Creating engaging and effective learning environments tailored for adult learners is essential for effective SFST instruction. Through practical exercises and discussions, you will discover how to leverage these principles to maximize knowledge retention and skill development among your future students, ultimately leading to more proficient SFST administration in the field.

Advanced Instructor Presentation & Facilitation Skills

Elevate your presentation and communication skills to expertly facilitate learning. Expertise in delivering constructive feedback and coaching will also be developed, transforming your instructional approach. SFST Instructor Roles & Responsibilities

Thoroughly understand the multifaceted roles and responsibilities of an SFST instructor to ensure confident and competent training program leadership. Mastering the SFST curriculum is a key component of this course, ensuring you possess the foundational knowledge to deliver accurate and standardized training. You will also gain practical experience in managing live alcohol workshops and become proficient in utilizing video-based training tools. By exploring these key elements, you will be fully prepared to deliver consistent, high-quality SFST instruction within your agency and contribute to broader traffic safety initiatives.

Course Requirements

  • P.O.S.T. certified
  • 75+ DWI arrests
  • Valid permit(s) for at least 1 breath alcohol instrument
  • Resume with education and law enforcement history
  • Proficiency in administering the SFST Battery

This course is approved by Missouri P.O.S.T. and provides the following Continuing Education Hours: total of 36 hours.

  • Technical Studies: 20 hours
  • Skill Development: 16 hours

This training complies with the standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Students must pass both a teaching practicum (pass/fail) and a written examination (80% or higher) to fulfill graduation requirements. Graduates will be qualified to conduct SFST training and given the resources necessary to do so.

Tuition is waived for qualified Missouri Law Enforcement Officers through funding by MoDOT grants. Agencies are responsible for lodging and other expenses unless otherwise noted.
